Augusta State avoided a sweep Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 victory
over USC Aiken in the finale of a three-game Peach Belt Conference
series at Roberto Hernandez in Aiken, S.C.
Augusta State improves to 14-25 overall on the season and 4-14 in the PBC. USC Aiken is now 27-13 on the year and 14-7 in conference play.
Augusta State's designated hitter Carl Burrow gave the Jaguars the early lead when he sent a ball over the left field wall to put the score at 1-0 in the fourth frame.
Travis Howard answered in the next half inning when he sent a ball just fair down the left field line for a double scoring Bill Rice all the way from first who reached by singling through the right side.
Gary Asbill later scored Howard who had moved over to third on a wild pitch to give the Pacers their first lead of the day at 2-1.
Augusta State tied the game in the top of the eighth inning off a sacrifice fly by Phillip Anchors to score Burrow.
The Jaguars were able to capitalize in extra innings pushing two runs across in the 11th inning.
In the bottom of the inning Nick Aranas raced across the plate to bring the score back within one off a single to the gap in right-center field by Asbill. Despite their efforts at the plate, the Pacers were not able to overcome the final one run deficit in the waning moments of the game.
Burrow paced the Jags offensively on the afternoon hitting 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Casey Hanrahan had two hits. Four different Jags had a hit on the day.
Chase Johnston earned the win for Augusta State in four innings. He is now 1-4 for the season. Chad Benefield suffered the loss on the mound for the Pacers after pitching two innings. He falls to 0-1 on the year.
ASU is back in action on Thursday, April 15 when they take on Paine College at 3:00 p.m. in Augusta, Ga.
