AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Jags opened up their Peach Belt schedule Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader against Flagler at Lake Olmstead Stadium. ASU won the opener, 5-3 while Flagler took game two, 7-4.
The Jags, who are 7-8 overall and 1-1 in league play, opened the day with a 5-3 win over Flagler. Junior outfielder Caleb Saggus led off the first inning with a walk. After a steal and sacrifice bunt, Saggus scored the first run of the game on a ground ball to shortstop by senior infielder Andy Onufrak.
Flagler would hold off the Jags until the fifth inning when two back-to-back walks turned into two more runs. A single by junior Jake Sutton plated senior Alex Walker while a single by Onufrak would score Saggus. The Jags would stir up more action in the eighth inning when a single by senior Casey Hanrahan scored two runs. The Saints scored two runs in the fifth and would manage one run in the ninth, allowing the Jags to secure their first conference win,
Junior starter Patrick Lowe earned the win, holding the Saints scoreless through five innings of work, surrendering only three hits, one walk and booking two strike outs. Hanrahan led the Jags offensively going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Onufrak added one hit and 2 RBI. Sutton contributed one RBI to the win.
The Saints, who are now 8-8 overall and 1-1 in league play, took a 7-4 win in game two of the double header.
The Jags held a 4-1 lead before a six run rally by the Saints in the eighth inning secured the win for the Saints.
The series will continue Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
