AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta State Baseball program has finalized its 2012 schedule, according to a recent announcement from Diamond Jaguar head coach Chris Cooper.
The Jaguars, entering their third season with Cooper at the helm, look to build on a nine-win overall improvement and five-win increase in conference play from last year. ASU played its best baseball down the stretch in 2011, winning four games in the PBC Tournament in Columbus, Ga. The Jags rode several clutch pitching efforts all the way to the title game vs. UNC Pembroke, where they narrowly fell 2-1 to the Braves.
"This schedule will be very demanding and as a coaching staff we are very excited to see our guys go out and compete every single day," Cooper said. "I have tried to do the best job possible of scheduling quality out of conference games to give our guys a better opportunity to be ready for conference play. We are looking forward to competing for the Peach Belt Conference title with the opportunity of reaching NCAA Regionals and the College World Series in Cary, N.C."
The 2012 campaign once again gets underway with a three-game series with Carson-Newman. The Jags and Eagles square off on Friday, Feb. 3 at 2:00 p.m., and meet in doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
ASU hits the road for a bevy of games early, playing 11 of its first 15 away, but then hosts nine straight contests, and 18 of the next 21. Overall, ASU plays 19 of its 26 homes games at Lake Olmstead Stadium, and 24 on the road.
The Jags open conference play on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Flagler in a doubleheader. They host rival USC Aiken in the home conference opener on Saturday, March 3 at LOS in a twinbill.
