ASU Snaps Skid
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State scored a non-conference victory over St. Andrews Tuesday night under the lights at Lake Olmstead Stadium, claiming a 5-4 win in a tight one late.
Leading by three, the Jaguars (7-13) had St. Andrews (5-14) down to their final out with runners on second and third. But the Knights' got an RBI single to cut the margin to one and put the tying run aboard.
Ryan Khan gunned down the runner trying to steal second, however, to end the game and seal the victory.
ASU took the lead as Clay Tucker scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second, and piled on two more in the fourth as Curtis Parker singled, Tucker walked, Justin Appel notched an RBI single, and Matt Smith executed a squeeze play perfectly to bring Tucker home.
They got the final runs with back-to-back doubles by Jeff Rice and Seth Foster in the fifth, and on Rice's sac fly to right to bring home Caleb Saggus in the seventh.
Matt Blume threw four innings for the win, giving up three hits and one run while striking out three. Tyler Ross booked his second save of the season.
The Jags trotted out eight different pitchers in the game, including two freshman getting their first appearances on the mound in Glenn Williamson and Russ Crosby.
Tucker led the Jags offensively with two hits, scoring two runs and stealing a base to help ASU snap a six-game losing skid.
The same two teams head to Jaguar Field Wednesday, March 7 to conclude their two-game set at 2:30 p.m.
