Jags Suffer Road Sweep
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo claimed a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon from Augusta State at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
The Falcons took game one 7-5 and then came from behind in game two to win 5-3. With the pair of victories, the Falcons completed a series sweep of ASU and clinched their first postseason trip since 2008 and first trip ever to the PBC Tournament.
Montevallo improved to 20-18 overall and 14-10 in the PBC while the Jaguars dropped to 11-29 on the season and 3-21 in the league.
ASU junior righthander Josh Barks (3-7) was charged with six hits and six earned runs and didn't make it out of the second inning in the opening. Senior Chase Johnston and junior Dylan Wall allowed just one run over the final 6.2 innings in relief of Barks.
Sophomore lefty Kip Custer fared better in game two for the Jags, giving up six hits and just a single earned run in 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Kyle Golden (0-2) was tagged with the loss after yielding three hits and three runs – one earned – over the final 1.2 innings.
Will Fulmer sparked UM with a 5-for-9 effort at the plate that included a double and a run scored. Wes Rich came in at the end of both games to pick up a pair of saves. Vincente Andrews was 3-for-7 with a homer, three RBI, three runs scored and a pair of hit by pitches. His homerun came in the seventh inning of the second game to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead.
The Jags jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff double by Saggus, a throwing error and an RBI-groundout by Ryan Khan. ASU made things interesting in the eighth, pulling within 4-3 on a Stack single and a Khan sacrifice fly.
Blaine Rosenberg gave Montevallo a 2-run cushion with his solo homer down the right field line in the eighth.
