ASU's Howard Sinks Benedict
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State sophomore guard
Demetrius Howard connected on a three-pointer with one second
remaining to lift the Jaguars to a 71-68 victory Tuesday night in
Christenberry Fieldhouse. The contest marked the Jags’
2005-06 home opener.
ASU (1-1) owned an eight-point lead at 64-56 after two Howard free
throws with 4:15 to play. Benedict then went on a 12-4 run over a
span of the next 3:04, with Joel Brown’s layup pulling the
Tigers even at 68-all at the 1:11 mark.
Howard misfired on a wide-open three-pointer on the Jags’
next trip down the floor before Brown missed on the other end to
set up the final dramatics. After the teams swapped three timeouts,
the last with three seconds left, Howard took a feed from sophomore
guard Larry Diamond on the left wing and drilled the game-winner
with 1.1 seconds on the clock.
Senior guard Karim Telfer and sophomore forward Tyrekus Bowman each
paced the Jags with 20 points. Bowman missed a double-double by
just two rebounds, and Telfer finished two assists shy of a
double-double. Howard tallied 11 points, including eight in the
second half.
Brown led the Tiger effort with a game-high 23 points, while Malik
McCullough chipped in 13 points and Charles Sweeney added 12.
The Jags were 21-of-28 from the free-throw line compared to
Benedict, which was 8-of-12 at the charity stripe. ASU outrebounded
the Tigers 42-37.
The victory improved ASU to 31-10 all-time in home openers,
including victories in three straight and five of the last
eight.
The loss dropped Benedict to 0-2 on the young season. The Tigers
fell 89-87 in overtime at USC Aiken on Saturday.
ASU returns to action Saturday when the Jaguars travel to
Statesboro, Ga., to take on Georgia Southern. Game time is set for
7:30 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse. The contest begins a four-game road
trip for the Jags, who don’t return home until they host
Georgia College & State on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
