Senior Alex Wennstam Shaves Six Strokes At NCAA Regional
EUGENE, Ore. – Representing the Jaguar men's golf team as one of ten individuals, senior Alex Wennstam improved his first round score by six strokes at the NCAA Eugene Regional, shooting a 3-over 73 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., Friday in the second round of play.
Wennstam started on the back nine in the second round after beginning on hole one to start the event on Thursday. A birdie on No. 10 started Wennstam's day after he carded a three on the par-four, 401-yard hole. Wennstam jumped to 2-under par after he birdied again on No. 13. Back-to-back bogeys on holes 16 and 17 put Wennstam at even par heading into his final nine holes.
A birdie on No. 3 got him back under par, but signing for four bogeys on his last six holes finished his day at 3-over par. Wennstam jumped the leaderboard to tie for 55th after he ended the first round at 64th. The top-five teams did not change as Stanford sits alone at No. 1 with a -2 under 558. Oklahoma is the next best team at 7-over, while Oregon, South Carolina, and North Florida conclude the top five.
No. 40 Oregon, welcomed the nation's best, including No. 3 Stanford, No. 10 Houston, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 22 South Carolina, No. 27 Baylor, No. 34 Liberty, No. 47 Tennessee, No. 51 North Florida, No. 58 East Tennessee State, No. 64 Chattanooga, No. 116 Wichita State and No. 151 Northern Colorado. Ten individuals ranging from GRU Augusta, Oregon State, Air Force, San Jose State, Sacramento State, Pacific, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, UC Irvine and Pepperdine also teed off in the event.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Play resumes tomorrow and concludes the tournament. Wennstam tees off at 9:31 a.m. on No. 10 for his final 18.
