Four Jags Named To All-League Squad
AUGUSTA, Ga. -
Augusta State was well represented Thursday evening when the Peach
Belt Conference announced its 2009 major awards. The league
unveiled its annual winners at a pre-tournament banquet prior to
the beginning of Friday's PBC Softball Championships at
Freedom Florence Recreational Complex in Florence, S.C.
ASU freshman shortstop Kacee Camp was named the PBC's
Freshman-Of-The-Year. A local product from nearby Harlem, Ga., Camp
led the conference in hitting with a .421 batting average and paced
the Jaguars in seven offensive categories, including hits (56),
home runs (four), total bases (80), slugging percentage (.602) and
on-base percentage (.454).
Fellow freshman Jessica Thornton joined Camp on the PBC's
all-league first team as the designated player/utility player.
Junior catcher Alysha Krier and freshman pitcher Sara DeMuth were
named to the conference's second team.
Thornton, from Blackshear, Ga., started in all 47 games and ranked
second on the squad in hitting at .327. She tallied three homers
and 21 RBI and led the squad with 16 steals in 17 attempts.
Krier, a junior catcher from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, ranked
third on the team with a .324 and started in 41 of 47 games.
DeMuth, a freshman pitcher from Plant City, Fla., led the Jags with
11 wins and a 2.01 ERA. She logged a team-high 122.0 innings
pitched and posted eight complete games and three shutouts.
The No. 5 seed, ASU (30-17) takes on fourth-seeded Armstrong
Atlantic State on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.
Daily admission to the tournament is $6 for ages 13 and above, $4
for ages 6-12, and ages under 6 free. Tournament passes are
available for $15 (adults) and $10 (children).
The tournament winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament.
