Lander Holds Off Lady Jags, 76-74
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Andrea Butler’s three-point play with 34 seconds remaining proved to be the difference in Lander’s 76-74 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta State Wednesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The victory kept the Lady Bearcats (11-4 overall, 5-0 PBC) undefeated in conference play. The loss, just ASU’s second in its last nine games, dropped the Lady Jaguars to 9-4 and 3-3, respectively.
Lander’s Tiara Good and TaSheba Butler each tallied 23 points, while Shannon McKever recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Nicole Mealing carded her second straight double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. Junior Tracey Paschal chipped in 12 points and Porsha White pulled down nine rebounds.
ASU trailed 39-28 at the half but and were behind by as many as 14 early in the second half before catching fire. A pair of 8-0 spurts over the first nine minutes pulled the Lady Jags to within 56-55 on a Sherika Parker layup at the 10:41 mark.
Lander responded with five straight points and led by as many as seven with 5:38 to play. A Sonya Jackson driving layup at the 3:16 mark cut ASU’s deficit to two at 68-66, and then a Brittany Jarrard layup forged a 72-all tie with 1:22 remaining.
After Lander went ahead 73-72 on a McKever free throw, Mealing’s two free throws put ASU ahead 74-73 with 46 seconds left for its first lead since the 9:42 mark of the first half. On the Lady Bearcats’ next possession, Butler took a feed from Good and layed it in and converted the three-point play with a free throw for the game-winner.
The Lady Jags had two chances in the final nine seconds, but neither a jumper by Mealing nor a putback from Adah Wells would drop.
ASU outrebounded Lander 62-36, just five boards shy of matching the school record. The Lady Bearcats forced 23 ASU turnovers and recorded 16 steals.
The Lady Jags host North Georgia in a PBC contest on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
