Fayetteville State Tops Lady Jags, 80-73
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Augusta State sophomore guard Brittany Jarrard scored a game-high 17 points off the bench Saturday afternoon, yet it wasn’t enough as the Lady Jaguars fell 80-73 to Fayetteville State at Capel Arena. The contest marked the season opener for both squads.
Jarrard, who connected on three 3-pointers, was one of four Lady Jags in double figures. Junior forward Tracey Paschal tallied 16 points and six steals, while sophomore Jasmine Godwin added 12 points. Junior center Sherika Parker just missed a double-double, posting 11 points and nine rebounds.
L’Oreal Price led the Lady Broncos with 16 points and Leticia Dickson chipped in 14 off the bench. Tenisha McArthur notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
FSU (1-0) led by as much as 12 midway through the first half. The Lady Jags (0-1) trimmed their deficit to five on a layup by Parker with 1:11 left and trailed 34-29 at the half.
Jarrard scored 10 straight points in a span of 2:56 midway through the second half that pushed ASU out to as much as a five-point lead. Senior forward Adah Wells put the Lady Jags ahead 67-66 with 5:11 to play before FSU got consecutive baskets to take the lead for good.
Senior point guard Deo Ngulela connected on a pair of free throws to pull ASU within 72-71 at the 2:17 mark. The Lady Broncos then answered with four straight points to push their lead to five and seal the victory.
The Lady Jags recorded 17 steals and shot 82.8 percent from the free-throw line but suffered 27 turnovers.
ASU returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 24 when the Lady Jags host Newberry in their home opener at 2:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
