ASU Tops Anderson, 65-62
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State picked up its fourth straight win Sunday afternoon with a 65-62 non-conference victory over Anderson in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Lady Jaguars improved to 6-2 while Anderson fell to 7-2 with the loss. The Lady Trojans entered the contest as the team receiving the most votes among those teams outside the top 25 in the nation.
Sophomore guard Jasmine Godwin paced ASU with 11 points and junior forward Tracey Paschal added 10. Anderson’s Keana Boyd led all scorers with 30 points, including seven 3-pointers. Latrice Thomas added 11 points and Nikki Anthony grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Sparked by Boyd, the Lady Trojans nailed 11-of-22 treys and used their perimeter attack to spark a second-half comeback. With ASU leading 42-29, Anderson put together a 15-0 run to grab a 44-42 lead on a Boyd jumper with 10:58 remaining.
The Lady Jags answered with five straight points – a trey from Nicole Mealing and a Deo Ngulela layup – to regain the lead. Mealing’s three-pointer snapped a 6:36 ASU scoreless drought.
Anderson battled back, pulling even at 59-all on a Thomas free throw at the 2:54 mark. Free throws from Porsha White and Tracey Paschal and Godwin’s driving layup put the Lady Jags ahead to stay by four. Boyd’s seventh trifecta of the contest pulled the Lady Trojans within 63-62 with 1:13 to play.
Boyd and Whitney Ketner missed on late 3-point attempts before ASU’s Godwin and Adah Wells provided late free throws for the final margin.
