ASU Claims Pair Of Victories

AIKEN, S.C. -- Augusta State's men's and women's cross country teams notched the first wins of their respective seasons Saturday at the Bridgestone-Pacer Invitational at Pacer Path.

The Lady Jaguars placed three runners in the top four and four in the top 10, led by senior Lyndsey Nichols' effort of 24:02.40 which was just seven seconds off the lead. She was followed by Jessica Carpenter (24:16.30) and Alicia Connolly (24:21.60) in the third and fourth slots. Savannah Sutton finished ninth, and Jacquelyn Nagel came in at 19th to cement the victory.

Flagler's Taylor Strekel won with a time of 23:55.60.

"The women ran well despite a very slow start, since no one in the field seemed ready to lead," cross country coach Adam Ward said. "Eventually, the pace quickened; our freshmen stepped up big for us and ran their first 6k very well."

Overall, ASU finished with a score of 37 for the win; Flagler finished second with 60.

Dustin Ross won his first collegiate event to lead the ASU men to victory, running a 26:33.60 to win by five seconds. Robert Blackwelder, Jaiden Brandt, and Matt Johnson finished 7-9 to put four Jaguar runners in the top ten. Shane Huckeba rounded out the scoring with his 14th place finish.

"Dustin got his first collegiate cross country win and is in great shape," Ward said. "He ran a very smart and controlled race, waiting to take the lead in the last mile."

The Jaguars finished with 39 points; Flagler finished second with 79.
